Adults Can Learn Too
Adults Can Learn Too
In my experience as a guitar teacher I’ve noticed a trend with my adult students. Most of them come into lessons thinking they are going to fail, or that “they’re just not musical”. A lot can be said about the courage it takes to start anything new past a certain age.
Regardless of neural pathways set by our younger brain, the real advantage to our adult brains is perspective and wisdom. This wisdom contains the awareness of how we sound and well we’re performing. Every guitar beginner, young or old, sounds bad at first. However, when kids sound bad they don’t consciously recognize it as much as an adult would. This bubble of unawareness is exactly what protects the child from negative reinforcement. It creates time for the young instrumentalist to develop at a healthy pace.
So my biggest message to adult guitar beginners is to stay positive! Guitar is a difficult instrument to start. It’s very important that the learner takes pride in their small achievements. The mechanical aspect of fretting notes is deceptively simple and takes a good amount of time to get used to. Like anything in life the real key is consistency.
Whatever your learning style is we can build from there. So curb your pre-dispositions and sign up for what could be your new hobby or unbridled life-changing passion. There’s no better time than now!

“I feel that in the last year my ability to learn and play the bass has greatly increased as a direct result of our relationship. I enjoy preparing for lessons, I enjoy practicing and it’s all because of the relationship I have with you.” -
